The breast is one of the most important aesthetic elements in the female body. In parallel with the increasing importance of external appearance and technological advances in our age, all aesthetic interventions have increased and breast augmentation surgeries with silicone breast prostheses have become one of the most preferred operations by women. The development of the female breast begins at the age of 9-14 and the development of the milk glands, connective tissue and adipose tissue that make up the breast is completed under the influence of genetic and hormonal factors. After the developmental period, the size of the breasts may not have reached the full size, resulting in a person to seek Breast Augmentation Surgery. As a result of a woman’s breast changing in size, volume or shape, due to increasing age, breast feeding and excessive weight loss, a woman may decide to have a Breast Augmentation procedure.
In these cases, Breast Augmentation Surgery can be performed with silicone implants (breast prostheses) in women who are over the age of 18 and do not have any conditions that prevent surgery.
Who are Good Candidates for Breast Augmentation Surgery?
If you are over 18 years old with a good physical health and if you want:
to have an enlarged cup size
to have an improved breast symmetry
to increase the clevage and volume of your breasts,
you are a good candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery.
It is important to customize a breast augmentation to create results that are natural looking and perfectly suited for the patient’s body and life style.
Breast Implant Selection Although there are two types of breast implants, silicone gel and saline implants, most patients and surgeons prefer silicone gel implants because of their more natural and softer feel. Breast implants can be either round or anatomically (teardrop) shaped. Implant size is one of the most important concern fort the patients. Depending on your anatomical properties and your aesthetic preferences, the right size of the implant will be determined during your initial consultation.
Breast Augmentation Incision Type In order to place a breast implant, we mainly choose an inframammary incision since it is well hidden in the crease where the breast meets the chest. But we can also choose a periareolar incision. In selected cases, a transaxillary incision can be chosen especially for saline implants.
Breast Implant Placement In breast augmentation surgeries, the prosthesis can be placed either just under the breast tissue (subglandular) or under the muscle (subpectoral or dual plan). Submuscular implants are less likely to show rippling or the obvious border of the breast implant. When choosing the plan where the prosthesis will be placed, the patient’s current breast tissue and skin thickness, whether there is sagging in the breast and the patient’s personal preferences are important.
Recovery of Breast Augmentation Breast augmentation surgery takes aproximately 1,5 hours. After breast augmentation, you may be discharged from hospital at the discretion of the surgeon, on the day of surgery or may require an overnight stay. You will be given a surgical garment, i.e. a sports bra and a detailed list of postoperative instructions. Some swelling, bruising and general discomfort is to be expected, but these will subside within a few weeks. It’s important to avoid heavy lifting, twisting or many household chores in the beginning to ensure a healthy recovery.
Can Breast Augmentation be Combined with Other Aesthetic Operations? Breast augmentation will help to enhance your breast size, however further procedures may be required if you suffer from breast sagging .In such cases, a combination of mastopexy and augmentation corrects nipple position and lifts the breast while increasing the breast volume.
Other than mastopexy, tummy tuck, liposuction and labiaplasty are the commonly combined aesthetic operations to Breast Augmentation.
Is It Possible to Get Pregnant or Breastfeed After Augmentation Mammoplasty?
The presence of breast implants does not constitute an obstacle to pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, it is recommended not to become pregnant within 6 months after the operation in order to complete the recovery.
What are the risks of Breast Augmentation Surgery?
The risk of bleeding and infection that may occur in every surgery, is also valid for breast augmentation surgeries. Normally, the breast prosthesis is surrounded by a shell in the body, called a capsule. In a very small percentage, this shell may thicken and compress the breast prosthesis and deform the shape. This condition is called capsule contracture and it may be necessary to remove this capsule and replace the prosthesis. Changes in nipple and breast sensation, implant malposition and implant rupture are the other risks of Breast Augmentation Surgery.
